Elementary Education

Developing a Sense of Responsibility

Our Elementary Classroom is designed with our 6–12-year-old students in mind. This 1st through 6th Grade space will resemble that of the Primary days but with some notable differences. Where the concrete materials of the Primary classroom end, the Elementary classroom will begin, giving students a seamless transition into the Elementary classroom. This age range has also grown out of the egocentrism of their Primary years and are suddenly very focused on their social relationships. They want to work in groups and to collaborate and will be invited to do so whenever they choose. These students also start to focus on social justice and finding their own voice and place in this big world. The materials in the room are built around the Five Great Lessons which tell the story of our universe, our planet, our species, and life on Earth in just such a way to spark their imaginations with a million questions. Questions the materials are waiting on the shelves to answer.

Class and Staff

Our Elementary program boasts two qualified teachers who have meticulously partnered our extensive Montessori curriculum with Missouri Department of Elementary Education learning standards. True to the Montessori Method, students progress through our Lower Elementary materials at their own rate with the opportunity for learning exposure well above “grade level”. With the intention of inspiring well-rounded citizens our curriculum includes Arithmetic, Geometry, Matter & Astronomy, Botany, Zoology, Health Science, Language, Reading, Writing, Grammar, Art, Music, US History, Ecology, World History and Physical and Cultural Geography. Elementary students also enjoy caring for our resident chickens, the vegetable garden, and the monarch butterfly garden. Our Elementary staff also pride themselves on ensuring that students spend at least an hour outdoors per day while the weather is safe. Our outdoor classroom overlooks second creek and provides the perfect opportunity for zoology and botany lessons firsthand.

“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.”
– Maria Montessori
